STORIES FROM THE SLUMS
49% – 64% of the Urban Population in Uganda live in slums due to the rising population.
Built with poor sanitation, used as a dumping ground for rubbish, lacking proper facilities and with a lot of unemployment.
It’s not just about poverty and poor facilities; generations have lived, worked and survived in these slums.
Food, water, Medication and other basic needs cost money and it’s the same way around in the slums, making a living no matter how is the only way to survive.
Growing up in the slums wasn’t easy. But I was and I am always inspired by how people survive day by day in the poorest conditions one could live in.
13 years ago, I moved from a place I used to call home, I never wanted to go back until I changed my life. Yes, I feel like I had a change in my life and it feels great to be back to a place I used to call home. Walk through the same small corridors I walked in and ran through when I was still young.
It’s always inspiring to be back here to see how people are happy here with the less they have. How single mothers are able to raise their families, send their children to school and also have something to share with their neighbor(s), with and income of 1.5 dollars per day or less.
These are my people, my family, my friends, this is where I came from.
